Overview

The first stupa built by King Dutugemunu after his victory over King Elara. Legend says the king went to bathe in the Tissa Wewa leaving his sceptre (kunta) with a Buddha relic planted in the ground. When he returned, it could not be moved, so he built the stupa over it.
